Supporting canopy development and yield in OSR with Status®


Strong autumn establishment has meant many UK oilseed rape (OSR) crops are entering spring in excellent condition, with canopy sizes among the most promising seen in the past decade. With OSR commodity values remaining firm at around £400/t, the crop continues to offer extremely favourable margins despite broader market and seasonal uncertainty. 

As crops begin stem extension, growth rates will increase sharply and nitrogen demand will start to accelerate. During this time, critical processes will take place and during this time growers can: 

  • Ensure rapid canopy expansion
  • Maximise branching potential 
  • Correct early-season nutrient imbalances 
  • Protect yield formation as metabolic demand increases 

An application of Status® at stem extension (GS32) supports crop performance by improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), strengthening rooting activity and increasing resilience to any abiotic stress that may occur in Spring. 

Following a winter characterised by mild temperatures and high rainfall, many OSR crops, particularly vigorous hybrids, have developed large, metabolically active canopies. To sustain rapid growth, plants must maintain a stable carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio, which underpins protein synthesis, cell division and overall metabolic regulation. 

As photosynthesis fixes carbon from the atmosphere, nitrogen uptake from the soil must increase symbiotically to maintain this balance. Any limitation in nitrogen availability during early spring can restrict canopy expansion, reduce branching and ultimately reduce yield potential. 

Status® supports this process by acting on photosynthesis and nitrogen assimilation simultaneously, enabling crops to meet the high metabolic demands of stem extension. It contains MTU® and pidolic acid, technologies that work together to support plant metabolism during periods of rapid growth. 

MTU® enhances activity at Photosystem I, supporting ATP production and protecting photosynthesis under variable conditions. This improves the plant’s ability to fix carbon efficiently, even when light levels or environmental conditions are sub-optimal. Pidolic acid supports nitrogen assimilation, helping the plant convert available nitrogen into amino acids and proteins required for growth. As carbon assimilation increases, nitrogen demand rises in parallel, driving improved NUE rather than forcing uptake. 

Together, these effects support stronger early branching and more balanced canopy structure, allowing improved nutrient utilisation during rapid spring growth 

January 2026 saw particularly low sunlight levels across many UK OSR regions. Under low-light conditions, ATP generation through photosynthesis is constrained, limiting growth and increasing the risk of early-season stagnation. 

Status® helps counteract this limitation by sustaining ATP production via its action on Photosystem I. This supports continued metabolic activity, promotes branching and helps crops transition smoothly into spring growth despite restricted light availability. 

Across two UK trial sites in 2021, Status® applied at 0.25 L/ha at GS32 delivered an average +0.3 t/ha yield increase compared with untreated crops. At current OSR prices, this equates to a £103/ha return on investment. Across a wider dataset (2020–2025), Status® has delivered a mean yield response of +5.03% (n=38) across trials in the UK, Czech Republic, Poland, Canada, Germany and Hungary.

Status® is crop safe and compatible with standard OSR spray programmes, including PGRs, fungicides and micronutrients. Applied at the onset of canopy expansion, it helps crops build a stronger, more even structure, supporting branching and maximising flowering sites.
