Mitigate proactively against a dry spring with MTU®


Across the UK and Europe, dry weather has been a defining feature of April. Unfortunately, the Met Office has indicated that predominantly dry conditions are likely to continue in the UK into May and potentially even June. Across Europe, the picture is more mixed but still concerning, with the European Drought Observatory recently warning drought conditions in countries including Belgium, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Romania are likely. For growers, that creates a familiar and increasingly standard challenge: how to protect crop growth proactively, before limited moisture and rising stress restrict growth and negatively impact yield potential.

In these situations, the agronomic objective is to react before stress is visible. By the time crops show obvious signs of drought or heat stress, yield-building processes are likely to already have been compromised. The better strategy is to support crop physiology in advance, helping plants maintain energy production and nutrient metabolism, ensuring they are able to keep up their recovery capacity as conditions become even more difficult.

This is where IntraCrop’s key technologies, MTU® and pidolic acid, can be particularly helpful to growers. MTU® supports cyclic electron flow around Photosystem I under stress, increasing ATP production and helping the plant sustain energy generation during periods of abiotic stress such as drought, heat and herbicide stress. Pidolic acid plays a complementary role by supporting nitrogen assimilation for roughly three weeks after application, helping the plant continue amino acid and protein synthesis at a time when stress would otherwise slow growth and shift metabolism towards survival.

The combination of both biostimulants matter, because dry springs are rarely the only challenge growers are facing. Drying soils are often accompanied by large diurnal temperature fluctuations, bright conditions, high UV and, in some crops, added pressure from crop protection inputs. In sugar beet, these products can help alleviate adverse effects from herbicide use by maintaining photosynthetic efficiency and root growth following herbicide applications, while early use can aid rapid establishment and improve canopy and ground cover. The same physiological logic applies across combinable crops. In spring barley, where short seasons mean yield is closely tied to how quickly biomass is built, results have repeatedly shown positive effects on key yield-building metrics including ears/m², grains/ear and thousand grain weight. In a Czech trial, Status® increased ears/m² by 12%, average grain weight by 12% and yield by 7% versus the untreated. In a Newcastle University Farms trial, an early application of Status® at BBCH13 followed by Program at BBCH30 increased yield by 1.4 t/ha and improved nitrogen use efficiency by 24.7%, while grain nitrogen remained within the desired specification.

Sugar beet data tells a similar story around stress timing. In Eurofins trials, when these technologies were applied ahead of the peak stress period they delivered the strongest response, with yield increasing by 10.81 t/ha versus the untreated in a stressful year. The results were clear: the strongest impact comes when applications are made before the peak stress event, not after it.

That is the key message for growers facing a dry start to the season. Whether the concern is preserving early biomass, protecting crop safety around herbicide programmes, sustaining nitrogen metabolism, or improving resilience ahead of potential drought and heat pressure, the goal is to build tolerance into the crop before it shows signs of stress.
