In increasingly variable and extreme growing seasons, UK sugar beet growers are turning to biostimulants to protect yield potential, particularly under heat, drought, and nutrient stress. Sugar beet stress during long growing seasons

Sugar beet is a long-season crop, often in the ground from April to November. This extended window leaves it vulnerable to multiple abiotic stressors, including:

  • Prolonged drought
  • Heatwaves
  • Nutrient uptake challenges
  • Herbicide-related stress

Growers frequently witness yield loss, leaf senescence, and reduced sugar accumulation during and after stress events—especially when they coincide with key developmental stages like canopy building and sugar loading.

How Status® works

Status® combines MTU® and Pidolic Acid to support physiological resilience during peak stress periods:

  • MTU® enhances cyclic electron flow around Photosystem I, increasing ATP production and maintaining photosynthetic efficiency during heat or drought.
  • Pidolic Acid supports amino acid synthesis and protein formation by sustaining nitrogen assimilation when plants would otherwise shut down growth and prioritise respiration.

Together, these mechanisms enable continued chlorophyll retention, canopy growth, and sugar accumulation—critical for maintaining yield quality and quantity during stress events.

Trial outcomes

In replicated small plot trials in Lincolnshire (2022), an early June application of Status® (0.25 L/ha) on unirrigated sugar beet delivered an 11 t/ha yield increase over untreated controls—equivalent to £363/ha based on current contract prices. Notably, the application was made just before a severe 39°C heatwave, and treated crops retained green leaf area and sugar content far better than untreated equivalents.

In the same year, a commercial-scale application across 100 ha by agronomist Ryan Overton resulted in a 20 t/ha yield advantage above the five-year farm average, again during a period of extreme heat.
In 2023, although conditions differed, Status® continued to demonstrate early canopy development and yield improvements. It was also noted that, unlike some nutrition products, Status® did not contribute to elevated amino-N levels, a purity concern seen in some sugar beet crops during that season.

2024: Sugar beet yield response confirmed

More recently, 2024 tramline trials across three Norfolk farms (Stody Estate, South Pickenham, and Wicken Farming Co.) yielded an average 4% increase in root weight when Status was applied at BBCH 16–18. On-farm digs confirmed notable top and root weight improvements across multiple digs.
