Enhancing NUE and resilience in maize with Pro+Nviron PCA


Maize is a high-demand crop with significant nitrogen (N) requirements to achieve optimal biomass accumulation and yield. However, conventional nitrogen fertilisation strategies are often limited by inefficiencies such as leaching, volatilisation, and poor assimilation under stress conditions. These challenges not only reduce nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) but also increase production costs and environmental impact. Pro+Nviron PCA is a pidolic acid biostimulant combined with ureic nitrogen and urea formaldehyde, provides a solution to addressing these limitations in maize production.

A Dual-Action Approach to Nitrogen Supply

Pro+Nviron PCA combines controlled-release nitrogen with the plant biostimulant pidolic acid (PCA), delivering both immediate and sustained nitrogen availability. The formulation includes a blend of readily available urea and longer-chain nitrogen polymers such as methylene urea derivatives. While the urea fraction is rapidly assimilated, the polymeric nitrogen forms are gradually broken down by plant and microbial enzymes, releasing nitrogen over a period of 6–8 weeks after.

This controlled release ensures that nitrogen availability is synchronised with the crop’s physiological demand throughout key growth stages for 8 weeks following application, from early vegetative development (GS18) to end of tasseling (GS59). As a result, nitrogen losses are minimised, and nutrient uptake efficiency is significantly improved.

Improving Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Maize

Nitrogen use efficiency is a critical determinant of maize productivity. Pro+Nviron PCA enhances NUE by maintaining a consistent nitrogen supply, reducing the risk of deficiency during peak demand periods. By limiting losses through leaching and volatilisation, more applied nitrogen is retained within the crop system.

Role of Pidolic Acid in Nitrogen Assimilation

A key differentiator of Pro+Nviron PCA is the inclusion of pidolic acid, a central signalling molecule in the nitrogen assimilation pathway. Pidolic acid plays a critical role in regulating the conversion of ammonium (NH₄⁺) into amino acids such as glutamine and glutamate via the glutamine synthetase (GS) and GOGAT pathways.

Under optimal conditions, this process supports protein synthesis and growth. However, under stress conditions, such as drought, temperature extremes, or nutrient imbalance, nitrogen metabolism can become disrupted. This leads to the accumulation of toxic ammonia and the breakdown of plant reserves, often visible as leaf chlorosis and reduced vigour.

By enhancing nitrogen assimilation, pidolic acid helps to:

  • Prevent toxic ammonia build-up and permitting green leaf retention for photosynthesis
  • Maintain amino acid and protein synthesis
  • Enable metabolic balance between growth and respiration to continue

This is particularly important in maize, where rapid growth phases require efficient nitrogen metabolism to sustain yield formation.

Pro+Nviron PCA is applied at a rate of 20 L/ha in maize, typically at GS18-59. Its compatibility with standard crop protection products allows for easy integration into existing spray programmes.
