Enhance Phosphate Use Efficiency (PUE) & Increase Yields

Improve Phosphate Use Efficiency with Status®

Phosphorus, in its assimilable form as phosphate, is a vital nutrient for plant development, essential for processes like cell membrane maintenance, carbohydrate metabolism, and the formation of high-energy compounds such as ATP. It also drives key physiological responses, including seed germination, root development, and flower formation, ultimately influencing crop yields. Recognising these critical roles, improving phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) is pivotal for improving crop quality, increasing yields and supporting sustainable agriculture.

A recent glasshouse trial conducted by Jaroslav Nisler at the Institute of Experimental Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences, examined the impact of Status® on the growth and nutrient uptake of winter wheat (variety Turandot). The results clearly show the potential of Status® to enhance PUE significantly, surpassing even its effects on nitrogen use efficiency. Status® is already CE Marked for Nitrogen Use Efficiency, but its impact on PUE is even more significant.

The study treated winter wheat plants at the GS13 growth stage with Status® (0.25 l/ha in 200 l/ha water volume). Control plants received only water. Each treatment was replicated 10 times, and key growth metrics—root and shoot dry weight, SPAD chlorophyll index, and nutrient contents (N, C, P)—were measured.

Key Findings

Biomass and Chlorophyll Content

  • Shoot dry weight increased by 7.2% 14 days post-treatment.
  • Root dry weight exhibited a statistically significant rise of 16.7%, highlighting improved root growth.
  • SPAD readings for chlorophyll content were consistently higher in treated plants:
    • 6 days after treatment: Both leaves 2 and 3 were 17% greener.
    • 12 days after treatment: Greenness rose to 30% compared to controls.

Nutrient Uptake

Statistically significant increases in nutrient content were observed in treated plants:

  • Nitrogen content increased by 9.4%.
  • Carbon content improved by 2.4%.
  • Phosphate content increased by 11.9%.

When calculated in terms of total dry weight, treated plants absorbed:

  • 17% more nitrogen
  • 10% more carbon
  • 20% more phosphorus

These results underscore that Status® substantially enhances PUE, facilitating improved uptake and assimilation of this important nutrient.

Implications of Phosphate Efficiency for Crop Management

The ability of Status® to significantly enhance phosphate uptake has important implications for agricultural productivity and sustainability:

  1. Yield: Enhanced root growth and chlorophyll content improve nutrient uptake and photosynthetic efficiency, directly influencing crop yield.
  2. Resource efficiency: By improving PUE, Status® reduces the reliance on phosphorus fertilisers, alleviating environmental concerns related to excess phosphate runoff, supporting growers with SFI targets.
  3. Adaptability to deficiency: Enhanced PUE ensures better crop performance under phosphorus-limiting conditions, promoting resilience.

Conclusion

The findings from this study illustrate the efficacy of Status® in boosting phosphate use efficiency in winter wheat, as well as benefits for nitrogen and carbon uptake. These results present a compelling case for the inclusion of Status® into crop management programmes, supporting productivity and sustainability in for growers.
