Following the latest Maize Growers’ Association (MGA) maize trials, MGA Technical Lead, Jon Myhill discussed the added value growers see with foliar nitrogen programmes and IntraCrop’s Nutrino Pro.
“Maize takes up over 60% of its nitrogen from the V9 stage onwards, so early soil applications don’t always match crop demand,” he explained. “That’s where foliar nitrogen really comes into its own- delivering nutrients exactly when the plant needs them most.”
According to Jon, foliar N trials have consistently shown that foliar nitrogen can improve both yield and quality, without increasing total nitrogen use, helping growers achieve greater efficiency from existing nitrogen inputs
“We’ve seen yield improvements of up to 14% across seasons, but more importantly, it’s about improving nitrogen use efficiency. You’re getting more from the same, or even less, nitrogen.”
During the presentation, Nutrino Pro was highlighted as a reliable agronomic tool which consistently delivered significant yield and quality benefits across MGA trials, sites and seasons.
Nutrino Pro is a high-efficiency, low-scorch foliar nitrogen fertiliser featuring controlled-release technology, magnesium, sulphur, and the biostimulants pidolic acid and R100 to support nutrient uptake and utilisation.
Nutrino Pro also showed impressive results on grain maize in a 2024 MGA trial in Norfolk.
“It’s not about removing soil-applied nitrogen entirely, it’s about making the whole system more efficient,” Jon added. “When you combine a solid base with targeted foliar applications like Nutrino Pro, that’s where we’re seeing the strongest, most consistent results.”
