Professional qualifications strengthen IntraCrop provision

Tom Godfrey and Michael Noonan have each successfully completed significant industry qualifications. Their hard work and dedication underscore IntraCrop’s commitment to continuous professional development, ensuring it provides its clients with the most current, expert advice.

Michael Noonan has achieved the Certificate in Crop Protection (Agriculture) from BASIS, a leading qualification for professionals in the agronomy and crop protection industry. BASIS is an independent organisation committed to raising professional standards across land management and food production by supporting people and businesses with industry-leading qualifications, professional registers and auditing schemes.

This certification, which has been a legal requirement for over 45 years in the UK for those advising on Plant Protection Products, is an essential credential for advancing professional standards in sustainable crop production.

Michael completed his course at Harper Adams University over a period of nine months, studying topics such as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which promotes the use of cultural, biological, and chemical measures to control pests while safeguarding the environment. The course also covered key aspects such as weed, pest, and disease identification, transport and storage of Plant Protection Products, and relevant UK legislation.

Michael explained the value of the qualification, “The BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection has been a cornerstone of our industry for decades, and I’m very proud to have earned it. The course provided me with a deeper understanding of how we can develop sustainable crop production while protecting the environment. This qualification allows me to offer clients the most up-to-date advice on integrated pest management and crop production, and how biostimulants can be included in these programmes to the benefit of growers and the environment.”

Michael will now engage in ongoing professional development through BASIS’s CPD program, allowing him to continuously enhance his skills and stay current with industry advancements.

Earlier this year, Tom achieved a FACTS (Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) qualification, earning the Certificate of Competence in Fertiliser Advice. Since 1993 FACTS has been the body responsible for setting standards, training and accrediting the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of those providing nutrient management advice. This nationally recognised qualification covers the full spectrum of best practice for fertiliser management and environmental sustainability. The certification is endorsed by Defra, the Environment Agency, and major farm assurance schemes, showcasing its importance within the industry.

The course focuses on soil nutrient availability, properties of organic and inorganic fertilisers, plant nutrient requirements, and the proper storage and transport of fertilisers. It follows the AHDB’s RB209 Nutrient Management Guide and equips graduates with the ability to better advise on fertiliser regimes, nutrient management plans, return on investment (ROI) calculations, and soil management.

Reflecting on his achievement, Tom said, “Completing the FACTS course has been a great experience. The additional knowledge I’ve gained allows me to offer even more detailed advice to farmers on nutrient management and sustainable fertiliser practices, such as biostimulant use, that support crop productivity while protecting the environment. Having the qualification has installed a great deal of confidence in my ability to support the understanding and uptake of biostimulants.”

Upon completion of his course, Tom was nominated for the Brian Chambers Trophy, designed to recognise the highest achievers in the FACTS qualification program. Named in memory of Professor Brian Chambers, a pioneering soil scientist, the award celebrates excellence in soil and nutrient management.
