Research into the mode of action of the plant biostimulant phosphite has been published by the scientific journal, Frontiers in Plant Science. The project, led by Dr Ranjan Swarup of the University of Nottingham, confirms the role of phosphite in building root biomass and improving nutrient use efficiency in wheat.
This research was funded jointly by the BBSRC and members of the Phosphite Biostimulant Stewardship Group (PBSG), of which IntraCrop is a founding member. Neal Sanders, Operations Manager for IntraCrop, says this is an important step forward in reversing the European Commission’s exclusion of phosphite in the recently applied Fertilising Product Regulation (FPR). “Phosphite plant biostimulant has long been used by growers as an important tool in the agronomic toolbox, but until recently there was little understanding of how it worked. This ground-breaking research shines a light on the biostimulant function of phosphite and supports the premise that phosphite should be included under PFC6 of the FPR.”
